Emirates has announced that it will use Airbus A380 aircraft on both of its daily flights between Sydney and Dubai beginning in June. Both flights, EK 414 and EK 415, currently use a Boeing 777-300ER. The transition to the larger, state-of-the-art Airbus represents an increase of 1,890 seats every week and is considered a further indication of Emirates’ commitment to servicing New South Wales.
The A380 is a key element of the infrastructure of Emirates’ global flight network, centered around the specially-designed Concourse A at its hub in Dubai. From March 31st, Qantas and Emirates begin a partnership that will operate at least five daily A380 non-stop flights between Australia and Dubai, and 98 weekly flights overall.
On the A380, 399 Economy Class passengers in the lower cabin are situated below while 74 Business and 14 First class suite passengers, all of whom have fully flat-lying pod seats and the comfort of an on-board lounge, are seated in the upper area.
A recent Deloitte study estimated that an extra A380 alone could mean AU$342 million to the nation’s GDP. Emirates already directly employs over a thousand staff in Australia and further expansion of a variety of routes hints at good times to come for the airline’s activity in the region.
Emirates’ Vice President Australasia, Barry Brown, spoke of the part that Australia has to play in its future: “Australia represents an important market for Emirates and ranks in the top three countries on Emirates’ global network. The A380 is a core element of Australian activity, delivering considerable economic benefits through inbound seats and travel connections.”
Currently travelers from the US and Canada can fly non-stop on Emirates from Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Washington DC, New York’s JFK and Toronto to Dubai to connect to the flights to Australia. Only the flights from JFK are on A380s, with the remaining flights serviced by the smaller Boeing 777s.
