Head to the Tropical North May 17 through 26
As if its tropical beaches, crystal clear waters, fabulous marine life and lush terrain weren’t enough, visitors have even more reason to head for Port Douglas this month. Queensland’s northern-most resort showcases all its delights from the 17th to the 26th of May as the Port Douglas Carnivale hits town for the 19th time. Promising a taste of paradise, the sporting, cultural, gastronomic and leisure industries unite for a series of exciting events.
Originally created to host the Clipper Day yacht races, four classes of vessels – large racing yachts, cruising yachts, multi-hulls and sports boats – will yet again take center stage at this year’s carnival, as they race around the harbor over four days’ competition. Visitors can view the races from the steps on Four Mile Beach, where day four is also Beach Day, a chance for everyone to come out and enjoy some guided yoga and meditation or engage in beach cricket and tennis, as well as games for the kids.
Food lovers can attend the Sheraton Mirage’s Very Long Lunch, a charity event that does exactly what it says on the tin and also features celebrity guests. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Or else tour some of the town’s restaurants as part of the Taste of Paradise event, a day-long introduction to the Port Douglas dining scene that ends with an evening concert.
The Seafood Extravaganza also gives everyone the perfect opportunity to get stuck into the unbeatable fresh seafood caught daily nearby. With comedy, music, film and educational presentations also lined up, Port Douglas Carnivale is the ideal accompaniment to your inevitable desire to simply kick back and enjoy the natural beauty of this region.
