Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, will be home to the largest food festival in New Zealand, Visa Wellington On a Plate, from August 9 to August 25.
About 110 of the Wellington area’s top eateries will participate in the event, which will include 113 festival events over 17 days.
Festival events will include night markets, day trips, gourmet dégustation events, food trucks, hands-on dumpling and pizza making, classes with celebrity chefs including Josh Emett and Peter Gordon, and baking and cooking competitions.
The festival centerpiece is DINE Wellington, two weeks where 110 restaurants offer lunch and dinner set menus inspired by regional flavors and products.
Some of the 113 events include the Beervana beer festival featuring over 200 brews paired with dishes by top chefs during the opening weekend (August 9 -10), Wellington Fisher & Paykel MasterClass (August 10 – 11), Prison Gate to Plate featuring a four-course meal by Rimutaka Prison inmates and the International Chocolate Festival (September 8-10).
The festival will feature local products and ingredients including wine from the vineyards of the Wairarapa wine region, lamb and beef from the surrounding hills and grasslands, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and locally-caught fresh seafood. Wellington, with its large number of craft breweries, is the self-appointed “Craft Beer Capital” of New Zealand and craft beer will be a major festival highlight.
Wellington is known for its thriving food scene. With over 300 cafés, bars and restaurants, the city has one of the highest number of places to eat and drink per capita in the world.
