The Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square Hotel in the South Island New Zealand city of Christchurch is scheduled to re-open on August 19 after a $20 million repair and rebuild following the earthquakes of 2011. (Update – the hotel officially opened with a ceremony on September 4, 2013.)
The 154-room, 13-storey hotel is located in the heart of Christchurch. It was the city’s newest hotel when the earthquake struck. Even though the Novotel Christchurch suffered only minor structural damage, its interiors were severely affected by the February 2011 earthquake.
The city of Christchurch has been steadily rebuilding and recovering since the earthquake. The Red Zone Cordon, the fenced off area around the city’s inner center, was lifted on June 30, opening up public access to Cathedral Square and clearing the way for opening of the hotel.
The Novotel Christchurch is a short walking distance to the city’s main attractions including Cathedral Square, the Cashel Street re:START Mall, Hagley Park and the Avon River and Botantic Gardens.
