Perth Airport in Western Australia’s capital city has opened the first phase of its new international arrivals area featuring upgraded passenger facilities and other additions such as a duty-free shopping area. The new arrivals area is part of the airport’s ongoing redevelopment.
Under the redevelopment, the Terminal 1 building housing the international arrivals was extended by almost 200 feet to the east, effectively doubling the size of the arrivals area.
The Immigration arrivals area has been relocated to level 1 and is now nearly double the size of the previous area located on the ground floor.
The arrivals area also has more service counters and double the number of SmartGates – automated self-service border processing/passport control systems.
SmartGates use the data in the ePassport and face recognition technology to perform the customs and immigration checks usually carried out by customs personnel.
The SmartGates can be used by 16+ year old travelers who are holders of Australian, New Zealand or UK ePassports or are a member of any US Global Entry Program and have a US ePassport.
Next to the new Immigration area, passengers will now have access to a larger and modern JR/Duty Free store with more shopping choices. The new arrivals store is the first of three new updated JR/Duty Free stores planned for Perth Airport.
With the new duty-free store in the arrivals area, passengers will be able to make their duty-free purchases before proceeding into Perth.
The three new JR/Duty Free stores (one in arrivals and two in departures) will offer a wide range of products including luxury brands, designer fashion brands, beauty products, fragrances, electronics, watches, liquor, yummy treats, and Western Australian premium wines.
A new Terminal 2 Short Term Car Park is now also open at the airport and offers greater convenience to travelers headed to regional Western Australia. The parking area is located to the right of the entrance to the drop-off/pick-up area at T2, off Sugarbird Lady Road. Rental cars can be picked-up and dropped-off in the new Short Term Car Park.
Upcoming additions under the Perth Airport’s international arrivals redevelopment include new offices on level 1 for Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Immigration and (on the ground floor) new toilets, car rental booths and a quiet/prayer room accessible from the forecourt and arrivals hall.
The baggage claim area will be expanded to include three new double loop and one single loop luggage conveyor belts; the secondary examination (quarantine) area will also be expanded.
The redevelopment of the entire international arrivals area is expected to complete by late 2014.
