Air New Zealand announced its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft – painted in the airline’s stunning All Blacks livery – will be used for non-stop flights from Auckland to Perth. The announcement was made at the unveiling of the 787-9 in April 2014 as the aircraft was formally unveiled.
The plane will be the first 787-9 in commercial operation anywhere in the world. The 787-9 is a stretched version of the 787-8 Dreamliner with room for up to 40 more passengers and an additional range of about 350 miles (555 km).
The new Air New Zealand Dreamliner was rolled out of Boeing’s paint hangar in early April; it will begin service with flights between Auckland and Perth in October 2014.
Air New Zealand’s 787-9 is the largest commercially operated aircraft to be painted totally black. It joins a select few aircraft in the fleet that feature the black version of the airline’s new livery. The white version of the livery is being rolled out across the airline’s domestic fleet.
Painting the Dreamliner black took 5 days to complete and was done by 12 painters using almost 100 gallons of paint.
Air New Zealand’s new livery features the New Zealand Silver Fern, the use of which is authorized by Tourism New Zealand and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise. The black color scheme refers to the country’s successfull All Blacks rugby team.
Although the majority of the airline’s fleet will ultimately feature the white version of the livery, a select few planes will feature the signature black version – making flights from Auckland to Perth with Air New Zealand all the more special.
Air New Zealand, the global launch customer of Boeing’s 787-9 Dreamliner, has ordered a total of 10 of these airplanes for long-haul international flights. In addition to flights between Auckland and Perth beginning in October 2014, flights from Auckland to Tokyo and to Shanghai are slated to begin in November and December 2014.
Dreamliner 787-9 flights from Auckland to Tahiti and to Hawaii are planned in 2015.
The 787-9 has all the distinguishing features of the Dreamliner series including large windows, over-sized carry-on luggage bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity levels to reduce cabin altitude pressure (and hopefully, alleviate jet-lag) and a smoother, quieter ride.
