Sydney’s cool quarter comes alive
You won’t find a more cosmopolitan area of Sydney than The Rocks. Its amazing history is littered with bawdy tales of oldy-worldy debauchery and nefarious gangland goings-on down by the harbor. These days, having grown dilapidated for many years, it’s been transformed into a hip and happening hideaway for culture lovers. Starting on April 12th, The Rocks Windmill has sprung up for a month of events that bring visitors the best of the many positive things going on down by the water.
Home to a variety of shops and galleries as well as a weekly market, The Rocks is a nice place to while away an afternoon and explore the narrow streets in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Many of Sydney’s creative community ply their trade in the area and The Rocks Windmill is a convergence of the musical, artistic, theatrical and educational forces at work there.
Erected to symbolize the buildings that were once landmarks in pre-industrial Sydney, the WindMill is an intimate spot in which to witness a play, watch a film or see a band perform. Highlights this year include evenings dedicated to traditional food, renewable energy and an improvised hip-hop game show. During the day there will be art installations, alongside the chance to get your daily bread as the mill grinds wheat into your very own flour.
