Air New Zealand announced its first commercial route for its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will be flights to Perth from Auckland. Although Air New Zealand has not announced plans to introduce this aircraft on its flights to New Zealand from the US, North American travelers will be able to experience this luxurious aircraft when their travel plans include visiting both Auckland and Western Australia’s capital, Perth.
The airline is the launch customer for Boeing’s 787-9 aircraft. The 787-9, an extended version of the existing 787-8 Dreamliner, is 20 feet longer than the 787-8 and can hold up to 40 additional seats.
On flights to Perth from Auckland, Air New Zealand’s 787-9 will host 18 passengers in the Business Premier cabin. Seating is in a herringbone layout, with direct aisle access at every seat. Since no seat is directly adjacent to another, 2-person dining is offered in the cabin. Each seat becomes a 79-inch long lie-flat bed for comfortable sleeping on the long-haul flights with the addition of a memory-foam mattress, fluffy duvet and 2 pillows.
The Premium Economy cabin accommodates 21 passengers in a 2-3-2 seat layout. Each seat has a generous 41-inch pitch with 9-inch recline, a 5-inch wide armrest and a full leg rest with foot rest for comfortable reclining. Each leather-covered seat is over 19-inches wide.
The aircraft will also seat 263 passengers in economy class including 14 rows with its award-winning Skycouch seating. A three-seat Skycouch Economy row can be converted into a 29-inch wide and 5 feet 1-inch long comfy “couch” for relaxing and sleeping.
The economy class cabins have 17-inch wide seats in a 3-3-3 configuration, with 2 power outlets for each group of 3 seats.
Passengers aboard the flights from Perth to Auckland will benefit from the LED lighting used throughout the aircraft. The lighting’s soothing colors heighten a feeling of relaxation. They also are programmed to follow the progression of daylight/nighttime hours as the plane flies through different time zones.
The 787-9 Dreamliner includes all the other unique features of it predecessor with larger windows; a quieter flight; and higher humidity and lower relative cabin pressure to simulate conditions on-the-ground.
