A Qantas Faster, Smarter Check-In Kiosk
Qantas is extending its self-service check-in facility, dubbed Faster, Smarter Check In, to include its passengers flying to New Zealand with checked luggage.
Currently, the airline offers self-service check-in to passengers with only carry-on bags.
Qantas has now introduced bag drop counters for passengers using self-service check-in kiosks for select flights to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington at the Sydney International Airport.

However, the self-serve check-in does not support passengers with Q Bag Tags – permanent bag tags issued by Qantas – used on Qantas’ domestic Smarter Faster Checkin network.
Qantas frequent fliers flying to New Zealand, and having the new Qantas Card, can also now use Q Card Readers (different from self-service check-in kiosks mentioned above) for check-in — a facility previously restricted to Qantas frequent flyers holding Silver or higher status.

The Q Card Readers issue a boarding pass that also functions as a pass to expedited processing (Express Path) through customs and security, if the passenger’s travel class or frequent flyer status qualifies him/her for expedited processing through Express lanes.
However, passengers to New Zealand using the Smarter Faster Checkin service will not receive a SMS (short message service) text with flight details, unlike the domestic passengers.
Similar check-in facilities, but without a bag drop facility, are currently also available for all direct Qantas flights from Melbourne and Brisbane to Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown.
