Flying from Houston to New Zealand? You have lots of choices on how to get there – especially if you’d like to combine your trip to New Zealand with a stop-over in Australia, Fiji, Tahiti or even Dubai.
Quick-time to New Zealand will be with a flight operated by United to either Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO) connecting to a non-stop Air New Zealand flight directly to Auckland. From Auckland, you can connect to a choice of Aotearoa New Zealand destinations including Queenstown, Christchurch, Wellington and elsewhere through the country.
Add a Stop-over on an Island Paradise: Tahiti or Fiji
Air Tahiti Nui’s flights from Houston to New Zealand involve 2 stops – the first in LAX to connect to a non-stop flight to Papeete, Tahiti. After a short layover, you’ll be on your way to Auckland – with a total travel time of several hours less than flying by way of Australia.
Fiji Airways also offers 2-stop flights to New Zealand. You’ll fly from Houston to LAX and connect to a flight to Nadi, Fiji. Settle in at the airport for a few hours’ layover before departing on your flight to Auckland
Fly via Australia
While flying to Auckland on a non-stop flight from either LAX or SFO has the shortest travel time, if your destination in New Zealand is Queenstown, Christchurch or Wellington, you’ll find the travel times for flying by way of Australia about the same as Air New Zealand’s non-stop flights. The timing of your final flight connection could be a game-changer for the shortest travel time.
Qantas flies non-stop from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DFW) to Sydney and on to Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown, New Zealand – but if you can’t find a convenient connecting flight from Houston to DFW, you may be sitting in Dallas for most of a day. In that case, your travel time will be shorter if you fly to Los Angeles on a flight operated by American and connect to Qantas’ flights there.
Delta offers flights from Houston to New Zealand – but the route is longer than many of your other choices. From Houston, you’ll fly to Delta’s hub in Atlanta; then on to Los Angeles. From there, you’ll be on a non-stop flight to Sydney where you’ll board a flight with Virgin Australia / Air New Zealand to New Zealand. The bad news is that with 3-stops (depending on connections), you could spend over 30 hours to get from Houston to New Zealand on Delta and its Australia / New Zealand partner airlines.
United offers flights from Houston to LAX, connecting to flights to either Sydney or Melbourne and then on to one of New Zealand’s international airports – Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington or Queenstown.
An Overnighter in Dubai
If an overnight stay in Dubai on your flight to New Zealand is appealing, Emirates’ flights from Houston to New Zealand are what you’re looking for. Emirates flies non-stop from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Dubai. You’ll arrive in the evening and have time to explore a bit of this dynamic city and get some sleep before boarding the mid-morning 1-stop flight to New Zealand.
